Dogs and Princesses

Holidays are finally over and we are back on a normal schedule now which means that Kurt is working in PA during the week and Micaela and I are running the house. Last week I decided that I was tired of coming home (30 min each way) at lunch to let the dogs out of their crates. Option 1 - hire someone to do it for me, Option 2 - train the dogs to behave in the house while we're gone, Option 3 - just leave them in their crates until I get home at night. We decided to go with Option 2. We had left them home alone before, and for a few hours at a time and they were great, didn't get into any trouble (as long as the trashcans were out of sight). A while ago we left them home all day and they decided they would be bad and eat half our curtain, our loveseat, Micaela's backpack, books and schoolwork, so we didn't let them out after that. Well, some time had passed and Kurt agreed that we should try again. We left them for a few hours and they were great. I left them out when I went to work on Monday, and came home to find two small holes in our newly self-reupholstered loveseat. They got punished, but overall, for a whole day alone, that wasn't too bad. On Tuesday, we left them out again, and when I came home, not only was the loveseat much more torn up, but the one curtain was also ripped in half (funny how they picked the same stuff to chew up). Back to the crates. Any suggestions from you dog experts? I think a lot of it has something to do with having two dogs, they definitely play off each other. Oh well, here are the pictures. Oh, and there are a few pictures of "Queen Micaela" and her friend who spent the night "Princess Jocelyn" (if you look close, they did their own makeup).

They're not big dogs, right?
Baby gate the areas you don't want them in & let them have the run of the areas that are safe.

Also, I've heard that leaving a TV on can also help with some behavior issues since part the problem is they get bored & the TV provides some background noise for them. I know Bob & Shelli used to do this with Georgie.

Take another look at your love seat. I think the dogs are doing you a favor by tearing off that fabric.

Aww... I kinda liked the loveseat fabric. :)

I agree with Doug. When Ayla was little we used a baby gate to keep her confined in her "room" which was essentially the area beside our bed where she slept. She had toys, water, her bed, and a radio left on. Since it was her den area and she was mostly housebroken she never had an accident there. When her housebreaking was more reliable we let her have the run of the place, and she still mostly just sleeps in her bed. She's never been destructive though and she can't jump (over a gate, up on the bed, etc.), so your mileage may vary. Will they get into cabinets or drawers if you gate them into the kitchen?

If you can walk the little demons or play 15-20 minutes of fetch before leaving home they should behave better too. A tired dog is a good dog!
